ASSIGNMENT FOR WEEK 2:

October 29 - November 2, 2007

Writing Assignment
Welcome to your first assignment for the course. Please do not panic. This is easy.  Your writing assignment will be to choose an incident from your life and write a narrative or story about that incident. You should choose an event that taught you something about yourself, about others, or about some aspect of society that you had not thought of before. Remember, an incident is a brief segment of time–a morning, an evening, or at most, a day. You need to make the incident interesting in and of itself. And finally at the end you will write a conclusion about what the incident taught you. It is important to carefully select the details you include in your narrative. You as the writer need to select from the many details you remember only those details that support your final conclusion–that final thing you will reveal to your reader that you learned from the incident.

Your paper will be in two basic parts:

  1. The story part of the essay will tell the incident like a story incorporating descriptive details of place. This is the story that should be interesting by itself. You will eliminate those details that do not support or lead to your final conclusion.
  2. The second part of your paper will be your conclusion. In this you will tell your reader what you learned from the incident–to listen carefully, to watch for other people's feelings, etc.

This is the easiest paper we will write because it is based on your own experiences and there is really no set form to follow. When you return this paper to me, I will mark it, and either accept it as is or make some revision suggestions for improving the essay.  This essay should be at least 3 pages in length and no more than 5 pages..

    a.  E-mail your essay as an attachment file to Mrs. Naylor (be sure to print your name on page 1 of your essay)
